Ole Gunnar Solskjaer jokes Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen would get into his current Man United side

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joked his old teammates Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen would both start for his current side.

Stam and Johnsen were among the former players to return to Old Trafford as United celebrated the 20-year anniversary of their Treble success in a legends match against 1999 Champions League final opponents Bayern Munich.

The defenders reformed their partnership at the back with Denis Irwin and Gary Neville either side with Peter Schmeichel behind them in goal.

David Beckham, Paul Scholes Nicky Butt started in midfield with Solskjaer – who opened the scoring after four minutes – Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole also making appearances.

Speaking after the 5-0 win, Solskjaer highlighted the performances of United’s centre backs.

“Jaap and Ronny,” Solskjaer told BT Sport when asked which players had impressed him most. “We could do with them two at the back!"

Stam in particularly delighted the Old Trafford crowd with a typically no nonsense performance, wiping out Ivica Olic with a wild challenge that sent the former Croatia international flying.
