Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues dual challenge to Scott McTominay and Fred

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged both Scott McTominay and Fred to add goals to their game with the Brazilian yet to score this term.

The Manchester United duo have been a go-to for their manager at the base of midfield.

Bruno Fernandes has commanded the No 10 role but two men have often been deployed behind him.

The Portuguese star has been a regular goal getter from midfield, but Solskjaer wants his fellow midfielders to be the supporting cast.

“Adding goals from midfield is vital. Last season our three forwards were brilliant and scored goals, 60 odd, and Bruno came in and scored goals,” he said.

“But we needed more goals from midfield. Scott has the ability to go box-to-box and he used to be a striker.

“If Scott can get to double figures that would be a very good season for a so called defensive midfielder.

“For us to move up the league and to be successful in the cups we need our forwards to keep on firing and I wouldn’t mind some midfielders adding a few.”

McTominay has scored seven so far this term, his best total yet, which includes Tuesday night's winner over West Ham.

His team-mate Fred is yet to score this term though as his United total sits at three from 99 games.

This weekend's game could bring up his century and Solskjaer is convinced the 27-year-old is only getting better.

“He has really done well given that when he first came he was a boy who was struggling a little bit,” he said.

“It took him time to settle but he’s grown in confidence and quickened up his game so he’s not getting caught on the ball.

“Fred has the hunger and humility to improve and stick at it and keep working.

“There's not many people who can say they've played 100 games for Man United, he needs to score from outside the box soon too.”
