Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues David de Gea defence after costly error vs Chelsea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed under-fire Manchester United keeper David De Gea – despite his latest costly howler.

De Gea's gaffe gifted Chelsea a goal at Old Trafford and all but ended United's hopes of securing a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.

United and Spain No.1 De Gea has been at fault for nine goals in 11 games - including five in his last five – but Solskjaer refused to point the finger at the 28-year-old.

Asked if he was concerned at De Gea's loss of form, Solskjaer said: "No I don't really, because I know David.

"When you're goalkeeper or a striker you're always in the spotlight and any time you miss a chance or score you get good or and headlines.

“It's the same with David, he's been in the spotlight for right reasons for so long and now he's going through a period where he feels he could have done better.

"But, no, I don't have any worries about him, because he's a strong character.

“There's many different ways of getting back to your best performances and, of course I'll sit down and speak to David, as I've done when he's played well. But he's not the reason we're sixth.

"You cannot say there's any complacency. David is not the type to be complacent, he's a competitor, he wants to be the best.

“Whenever I didn't score a goal my confidence dropped, if I missed some chances, and David knows he could have done better with the goal, there's no reason hiding that.

"But there's no chance any of us will point fingers because he's saved us so many times."

Juan Mata put United ahead on his 31st birthday, but De Gea spilled an Antonio Rudiger shot in the 43rd minute, allowing Marcos Alonso to plunder an equaliser.

United remain sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and need to win their last two game and hope other results go their way if they are to finish in the top four.

“If you look at the league table it's going to be difficult,” said Solskjaer. “We need to make sure we turn up and win the next two games.

“Points are being dropped left, right and centre so you never know.”
