Ole Gunnar Solskjaer instructed to "address the real problem" at Man Utd and spend £80m

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to "address the real problem" at Old Trafford and sign a world-class centre-back.

That's according to Ian Wright, who thinks the Red Devils should be looking to land someone like Kalidou Koulibaly rather than Jadon Sancho.

Solskjaer has made just one signing so far this summer transfer window, bringing in Donny van de Beek from Ajax in a deal worth £35million.

The Red Devils have been linked with a £100m-plus move for Sancho since before the window opened, but Wright believes the club should be looking to spend this kind of money on a top drawer defender rather than on another forward.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty show, Wright said: "When you look at United, what they've got up front and you put Van de Beek in there with them too – they've just made one signing in Fernandes and it all changed, all of a sudden they looked amazing.

"But for me, from the defensive point of view, I just feel that they are still very weak. We're hearing that Manchester City might get Koulibaly – United have got to go in there to try and do that deal!

"If you look at them from left-back, yes we know [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka is fantastic right-back and a great defender. But [Victor] Lindelof and even Harry Maguire – from the left side they're there for the taking.

"If you're going to go and challenge those teams, that needs to be a lot stronger."

On Sancho, he added: "I'm not sure where he'd work at United now. They've got a player in Van de Beek who can play in three positions so that's good business from them.

"As much as we're hearing and seeing great things from Jadon Sancho, Man United need to do what Liverpool did – address the real problem and then see where they go from there."
