Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'in touch' with Cristiano Ronaldo as Man Utd monitor transfer situation

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in touch with Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United continue to monitor his situation at Juventus.

The footballing legend's future has become unclear with the Italian giants struggling in Serie A.

Andrea Pirlo's first season as manager has been a disaster with them relinquishing the Scudetto - that they had won nine years in a row - in jaw-dropping fashion.

Inter Milan have beaten them to the title but Juve might not even qualify for the Champions League this season.

With one game to go, the Old Lady are fifth and a point behind fourth-placed Napoli while the thought of Ronaldo playing in the Europa League is unthinkable.

Juve also fork out €30m a year in wages to the 36-year-old, an impossible figure to manage without Champions League football next season.

It means that all parties could agree on a departure and United have been tempted into bringing back the Portugal international, who shot to fame with the club.

According to The Athletic, Ronaldo remains in contact with Red Devils coach Solskjaer - who would be open to bringing back his former teammate.

There is an agreement that this would be by no means a cheap transfer with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner expected to demand huge wages that would top David de Gea's £350,000-a-week pay package.

But Juve could be tempted into a relatively low transfer offer given that Ronaldo's contract expires in 2022 and their own ambition to alleviate their wage bill.

However, the gigantic commercial value the Portuguese superstar possesses would entice United further - given his worldwide pedigree.

Despite approaching his late 30s, Ronaldo appears to be in no rush to call time on his incredible career and has insisted he can play for years to come.

Indeed his prowess in front of goal has not slowed down, with 36 goals in 44 appearances this season.
