Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints Paul Pogba could be set for new Man Utd role

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dropped hints that talisman Paul Pogba could be set for a new role in midfield after an impressive pre-season.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the powerful midfielders commitment to the club, with rumours surfacing that he could leave the club this summer.

But, the 26-year-old has shown some brilliant form throughout the duration of the Red Devils tour of Australia and Asia, playing on the right of a midfield two.

In United's most recent game, the Frenchman partnered young Scotsman Scott McTominay in the heart of the midfield during their 2-1 win over Tottenham in Shanghai.

So far United have won each of their four games in pre-season, and Norwegian boss Solskjaer has been happy with his midfield options and believes Pogba can play in a two and is versatile enough to play in a three, as he did last season.

"I thought they [Pogba and McTominay] played really well in the first-half," said Solskjaer after beating Spurs.

"They haven’t done that before [the tour] as a two and today I thought they really looked really like a good pair.

"Of course we’ve got Fred and Nemanja [ Matic ] second-half, we have Andreas [Pereira], so it’s something we have to look at.

"But we controlled the game better. Second-half we didn't keep the ball well enough, so disappointed with the second-half, how we finished, really. But it’s been a great tour. And those two played well.

"He [Pogba] can play in a two like he does for France but he has also got the freedom of picking his moments, when to go forward.

"Same with Scott, maybe his best position is like a number eight running forward. But I thought the two played very disciplined tonight."

Pre-season is far from over for the Red Devils with two friendlies still to play against Kristiansund in Norway on Tuesday before travelling to Cardiff to face AC Milan at the Principality Stadium next Saturday.

"I think we are getting better," Solskjaer said.

"We’re improving and pre-season is not about results, it’s about finding a way of playing, about finding a style that suits the players.

"And we’ve made good strides towards the team we want to be."

Manchester United have made two signings this summer with the arrival of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka , who have also impressed during the pre-season tour.
