Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails Raphael Varane's professionalism following Manchester United move

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he believes Raphael Varane has all of the credentials to help the club end their trophy drought, as well waxing lyrical about his professionalism.

The central-defender, who could make his United debut when they face Southampton at St Mary's this afternoon, joined the club from Spanish giants Real Madrid last week in a deal that could be worth up to £42million.

His arrival at Old Trafford has significantly strengthened Solskjaer's central-defensive options and finally ended United's search for an elite-level centre-back to partner Harry Maguire in the heart of their defence.

After missing out on last Saturday lunchtime's season opener against Leeds United, Varane could make his debut for United against Southampton this afternoon.

Ahead of the tussle at St Mary's, which will see United looking to extend their unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League to 27 matches, Solskjaer has hailed Varane's arrival at Old Trafford, highlighting just how impressed he has been with him since he walked through the door.

Asked if Varane has the ability to help United take that next step towards winning silverware, Solskjaer told Sky Sports : "Well, he certainly has all of the credentials to do that. He has impressed him since he has come in here.

"He wants to learn about our style of play, he works hard, wants to get his fitness up and knows that it has been a while since he played in the Euros.

"He is very meticulous. He is such a top professional and I think you know that by seeing his honours and seeing his trophies.

"You can see all that but you also look at him and what he has done off the pitch - there is not a lot of trouble there. For a manager, I am very impressed by him."

In total, Varane has won 19 major trophies during his career, including one FIFA World Cup and four UEFA Champions League titles.
