Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails Jesse Lingard impact for Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Jesse Lingard's contribution from the bench during Manchester United's late win over Villarreal but admits that is only what is expected of substitutes at the club.

Lingard, 28, made a huge impact on Wednesday night when he came off the bench to set-up Cristiano Ronaldo for his dramatic winner in the Champions League group game.

The England international had been cast as the villain when he made a costly error in United's opening defeat to BSC Young Boys two weeks ago but responded in style with a cool assist against Villarreal to secure three points.

It marked the second time Lingard has positively influenced a match for United as a substitute already this season following on from his dramatic winner against West Ham in the Premier League earlier in the month.

Speaking after the win over Villarreal manager Solskjaer hailed Lingard for his immediate impact having replaced Mason Greenwood in the 89th minute.

"Jesse was probably not happy at not playing more," the Norwegian told BT Sport. "But he comes on and make an impact. That is what you do when you are a sub at this club.

"It is massive for the players, to win a game in this fashion after we lost a game in Bern in that fashion. Every game is hard at this level.

"You see results you don't see very often, like yesterday. The margins are so small."
