Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails Bruno Fernandes' unusual new penalty technique

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Bruno Fernandes "scored with one eye" as Manchester United earned a significant advantage over Granada in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Fernandes scored from the penalty spot in the dying moments to double United's advantage and secure a potentially crucial away goal, after Marcus Rashford had opened the scoring in Spain.

The penalty was awarded after home defender Yan Brice caught Fernandes in the face, with the Portuguese left nursing an eye injury.

Solskjaer said he hadn't seen the incident at first, with United scoring from their 15th penalty this season in all competitions.

"To be honest, I haven't seen it, just seen his eye when he came on, he got hit," Solskjaer said after the match, via the Manchester Evening News.

"MIck Phelan was sat behind me in the dugout and he said he took one in the face, so it's a clear penalty.

"I've not seen it, I've got to say. His eye is red and to score with just one eye open is also a skill!"

Solskjaer also hailed the display of fellow goalscorer Rashford as United's 2-0 lead gives them a great chance of reaching the last four.

“They have been exceptional, they have been so good for us and they’re so important for us," he added to BT Sport.

“The first goal, very good run by Rashford and then he takes the ball fantastically and it’s a fantastic finish.

“And Bruno, I know he’s so confident on penalties and even though the goalkeeper almost saved it, it was good enough to give us a good lead."
