Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains why he picked 'best finisher' Mason Greenwood on the wing

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why he picked Mason Greenwood on the wing in Manchester United's 0-0 draw at AZ Alkmaar, despite referring to the youngster as his 'best finisher'.

Greenwood started the game on the right wing before moving into his more natural centre-forward role which was being occupied by Daniel James.

United didn't manage a shot on target throughout the whole of a dismal 90 minutes in Holland which saw them move on to four points from their first two Europa League group-stage fixtures.

And Solskjaer said the experiment was a bid to stretch the defence of AZ through using James' frightening pace through the middle.

"Stretch opponents," Solskjaer explained. "He stretches them. We never got to grips with the astro turf until second-half. First-half, we took some time before we got control of the ball and the game.

"Dan can play down the middle, he has done before, that was a tactical tweak we tried. Of course, Mason's more natural as a centre forward so we swapped them around."

Despite his side's struggles in front of goal, Solskjaer had praise for the defensive work his team put in as David de Gea recorded his third clean sheet of the season.

Marcos Rojo partnered Victor Lindelof in the heart of United's backline and came in for special praise from their manager.

"Rojo, Lindelof and David were the spine of the team," Solskjaer said. "Some of the thinking with Nemanja [Matic], Fred and Juan was having three experienced midfielders there but I felt with Marcos, Victor and David we were solid.

"And great to see with Marcos fitter and fitter, because he's a top player."
