Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains why Europa League football isn't such a bad thing

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a Europa League promise to his Manchester United youngsters.

United's Champions League hopes are dead in the water after a dreadful end to the campaign cast a shadow over improvement under their new boss.

They will miss out on top level European football next term - but their manager says the competition will have its positives.

United are to blood youngsters in the Europa League and with fans excited about the emergence of a number of their teenage prospects Solskjaer thinks it will be of benefit.

"Sometimes you can use Europa League as something positive," Solskjaer said.

"As Chelsea and Arsenal have done this year and as we did a couple of years ago when we won the Europa League.

"So you talk about smiling, I'm an optimist by nature, so you will make the most of it, is it giving players like Chongy (Tahith Chong) Mason Greenwood, James Garner game time?

"We have to make something positive out of it, no matter what."

Solskjaer has big hopes for the young stars but has has warned United's flops that they might have played their last match for the club.

United's 1-1 dismal draw with Huddersfield on Sunday only added to the bad feeling.

Former United defender Gary Neville was furious in his assessment of the game and says big changes will have to be made.

“This is Huddersfield Town who have struggled all season," he said.

"This is not a team," he said. "The more I watch this it’s not a team.

“Watching this Huddersfield team, they haven’t got the quality, but I like watching them a lot more than watching the ones in the red shirts, to be honest with you.

“At least you can identify with them. Nothing about this United team I like at all. They’re just awful.

“They’re a despondent group of people. Solskjaer is smiling at them they’re that bad.

“United’s away support will never stop singing, but this group of players have drained the energy out of them.”

United end the season with a home game against Cardiff City next weekend.
