Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Manchester United team selection vs Villarreal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his Manchester United players to embrace the pressure after picking an attacking side to face Villarreal in the Champions League.

Jadon Sancho has come into the side in place of Fred, with Paul Pogba dropping back into a central midfield role against the obdurate La Liga side, who have drawn six of their seven games so far this season.

United need a win against a side that beat them in the Europa League final in May to get their Champions League campaign up and running, having lost to Young Boys two weeks ago.

Solskjaer knows that has increased the pressure on his side, but he wants his team to go out and put on a performance at Old Trafford.

“It’s an important night for every one of us, it’s a big game, but it’s a great opportunity," Solskjaer told MUTV.

"This is what Man United is all about, Champions League nights, full house, a bit of pressure which we should embrace, that’s what you sign up for when you sign for Man United, big games and big moments."

Three of the four changes Solskjaer has made to the side are enforced, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka suspended and Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw both picking up injuries in the defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend. Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof and Alex Telles are their replacements in the back four.

“We've picked players we think are going to play well together, we’ve got a couple of injuries at the back," said Solskjaer.

"We’ve put a team together we think are going to cause problems for Villarreal. We also know we have to defend against them."

United know these opponents well after the Europa League final in Gdansk. They've also met four times previously in the Champions League group stage, with every match finishing goalless.

“They’re a good team, technically very good, tactically very good, happy enough to defend deep, they won’t give us loads of space, good on the counter-attack, very clever on set plays, so we’ve got our hands full but we’re looking forward to it," added Solskjaer.
