Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Manchester United team selection vs Man City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained the thinking behind Manchester United's line up against Man City.

United host City in the Manchester derby fixture on Wednesday night as they look to bolster their hopes of automatic Champions League qualification.

Solskjaer has named five changes from the team which was thrashed by Everton at the weekend with Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Andreas Pereira, Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard all returning to the line up.

And speaking ahead of the match, the United manager confirmed that his team selection was partly influenced by the fact some players weren't fully fit.

"A couple were forced, fitness wise," he told MUTV.

"Team shape, we have analysed City and we think the way we go is our best chance to use our strength and maybe stop their strengths."

United changed their preparations ahead of the derby fixture by returning to The Cliff to undergo a light training session ahead of the match.

And the United manager also explained his thinking behind the change in approach to such a pivotal match.

The Norwegian added: "It has not changed a lot but it is such a great place. We just had a stretch and a jog, fitness tests on one or two players. It was just to freshen up their heads. You can stay in a hotel all day long and that is not good for you. So it was nice."
