Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Manchester United formation change vs Tottenham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why Manchester United have changed formation for Saturday's game against Tottenham.

United lost 5-0 to Liverpool last weekend and that result meant change was inevitable for the Reds' visit to Spurs.

Old Trafford chiefs considered Solskjaer's future at the club following Sunday's humiliation against Liverpool, however, Solskjaer remains at the helm and the Norwegian has opted for a 3-5-2 formation to play Tottenham instead of 4-2-3-1.

The 4-2-3-1 formation has been synonymous with Solskjaer's tenure but United have looked defensively vulnerable in that system.

Solskjaer spoke before the Tottenham game to reveal the reason behind his team selection.

“We’ve put a few more experienced players in there," Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

"We need to have that experience and a solid foundation to perform from. That’s the main thing.

“We need to control the game with and without the ball. With the ball, if you have players in different positions then we need to use the full width of the pitch. That’s the full-backs/wing-backs responsibility now.

“We’ve got players like Cristiano and Edinson on the pitch together and that’s two players that you want in the box together, so we need to provide them with crosses."
