Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains how Manchester United midfielder James Garner has impressed him

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Manchester United midfielder James Garner after including him in the squad to face AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

The Under-23s midfielder has been in fine form this season scoring six in seven appearances for Neil Wood's side as they sit second in Premier League 2 Division 2, including netting the winner against Lincoln in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Garner was handed his Premier League debut last season when he came off the bench in the final minutes of the away win against Crystal Palace and has been given a place on the bench twice this campaign but is still waiting for his first start.

He might not have to wait much longer as Solskjaer has been impressed with the 18-year-old's development.

"Of course Jimmy (Garner) has now really, really, taken steps as a box-to-box midfielder,” Solskjaer told the United app.

“I think he’s developing all the time. He played 90 minutes last night (against Lincoln on Tuesday) so I don’t think we’ll see him from the start anyway. Let’s see how we are tonight (in training). The young boys are getting there but they are not the ones we are expecting to run the games.

“We expect a lot from our experienced players as well. It’s a nice time for them when they play with older men and last night against Lincoln was a good game for them to get ready for men’s football.”
