Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains five changes to Manchester United line up vs Chelsea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his decision to make five changes to his United side for the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea was intended to bring some "intensity" to his side.

The United manager has rarely altered his Premier League side in recent weeks, with just two changes to his last six starting XIs in the league.

That came on Thursday when Timothy Fosu-Mensah replaced the injured Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay came in for the rested Nemanja Matic, but with those games in coming in just 23 days Solskjaer has seen the need to ring the changes with a cup final in sight.

The Norwegian made eight changes in the quarter-final win against Norwich City and United performed poorly on the day, only edging past the Canaries in extra-time, so he will hope for an improved display against Chelsea at Wembley.

Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams, Matic, Fred and Daniel James are the players coming in and Solskjaer has backed them to take their opportunity.

"There's a chance for everyone," Solskjaer told MUTV. "They’ve been waiting patiently, doing well when they have a chance, Fred and Jamo bring fresh legs and some intensity we need on a big pitch, a draining Wembley pitch."

Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial have all dropped to the bench and while Greenwood looked tired in United's two games last week, the decision to rest the two Frenchmen is a bold move from Solskjaer.

“They’ve played a lot of football, it’s about freshening up the team but giving them the chance to make a difference when they come on," Solskjaer said.

United XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Lindelof, Maguire, Williams; Fred, Matic, Fernandes; James, Rashford.
