Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drops hint over Man Utd team selection for Liverpool clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has appeared to confirm Mason Greenwood will start for a fourth game in just eight days when Manchester United face Liverpool on Thursday.

The 19-year-old has been in blistering form for his side, scoring again vs Leicester on Tuesday to take his tally to seven goals in his last 10 appearances.

Greenwood was the only player to keep his place from the team which started against Aston Villa at the weekend, which raised the suggestion the striker may not feature from the off against Liverpool.

But Solskjaer is seemingly keen not to disrupt Greenwood's purple patch despite trying his best to remain coy during his press conference on Wednesday.

Asked if he would be switching up his selection again, Solskjaer replied: "There will be changes of course but many of the players that played tonight did really well so they’re in contention as well.

"It’s about managing the squad now and building momentum, building confidence, making sure we get enough points to get second and then going into the [Europa League] final confident.”

United's place in the top four is already confirmed and they look likely to secure the runners-up spot behind champions Man City in the coming weeks.

The final against Villarreal has now taken on a greater importance, but Solskjaer will no doubt be wanting to get one over United's rivals Liverpool, particularly if it stops the Merseyside club qualifying for the Champions League.

Key to that could be Greenwood, who is now pushing for a place in England's team for Euro 2020 this summer after another standout display in a weakened United side vs Leicester.

Discussing the striker's role in the defeat, Solskjaer said: "You saw some definite leadership, the way he had to take responsibility.

“He did really well, considering his age he’s got [over] 100 games [under his belt] and has got loads of experience.

“The way he took responsibility, I was really pleased with it, that’s maybe not as easy when you’ve got Bruno [Fernandes], Paul [Pogba], Marcus [Rashford] and Edinson ]Cavani] next to you, which is natural.”

And in a nod to his prospective starting XI vs Liverpool, Solskjaer looks to be eyeing a full strength lineup, adding: “I still want him to take that responsibility when he plays. No matter how old you are, if you believe in yourself, trust in yourself, and think it’s the right decision, you make that decision.

“He did that tonight and I still want him to do that on Thursday, when he plays with the more experienced ones.”
