Ole Gunnar Solskjaer details Man Utd striker wish ahead of transfer deadline

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he wants to sign a striker before the end of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils boss was speaking after his side's Carabao Cup exit to Manchester City, with United unable to add to Nemanja Matic's first-half goal as they tried in vain to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.

It has long been expected that United would target a striker in January, having struggled for goals earlier in the season.

They missed out on top target Erling Haaland when the 19-year-old hotshot left Red Bull Salzburg for Borussia Dortmund early in January.

And the need for more firepower became even more pressing when Marcus Rashford suffered a double stress fracture in his back which is set to keep him out for at least six weeks.

After United failed to net another against City following Matic's opener in a 3-2 aggregate defeat, Solskjaer outlined what his side need and said he would demand more desire from the players.

“We need more goalscorers, more goals, someone who wants to break their nose or toe to score," said Solskjaer.

"It doesn’t always have to be nice goals. I need to challenge them more.”

United were linked with a move for experienced Paris-Saint Germain striker Edinson Cavani, but the Uruguayan appears set to join La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

They are also reportedly in talks with Leicester over the potential transfer of forward Islam Slimani- but face competition from Tottenham.

There was good news for United on the transfer front on Wednesday when they announced they had agreed a deal to sign midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal international will now move to Old Trafford subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms.
