Ole Gunnar Solskjaer details Man Utd reasons for Edinson Cavani transfer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United couldn’t miss out on the chance to sign Edinson Cavani - and is expecting his young attackers to learn from the veteran striker.

The Uruguayan has completed a move to United following his Paris Saint-Germain exit.

Cavani, 33, departed the Parc des Princes in the summer, after seven years in the French capital, where he became the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

The ex-Napoli man scored 200 goals in 301 games for PSG, but only netted seven times in 22 games last term, during an injury-hit campaign.

Cavani, has signed a one-year deal, with a one-year option in United’s favour, worth £200,000-a-week.

And Solskjaer has no doubts that he will make a big impact at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer said: “Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team.

“His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre.

“He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals.

"He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level."

Solskjaer has Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial currently leading his attack.

And he believes that the trio can learn from Cavani while he is at the club.

“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last 10 years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward.

“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”

Cavani, who has won golden boots in Italy and France, became United’s third signing on transfer deadline day, following Porto fullback Alex Telles and Amad Diallo, the young Atalanta winger who will arrive in January.

However, after the 6-1 mauling by Spurs on Sunday, United made no move for a new centre-half - despite calls for them to strengthen at the back.
