Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Man Utd defender will be allowed to leave this month

Timothy Fosu-Mensah will be allowed to leave Manchester United in January, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

The defender's contract expires in the summer and he recently rejected a fresh offer from the club.

Fosu-Mensah joined United as a 16-year-old from Ajax's academy but has been unable to nail down a first team spot.

The Dutchman is still only 23 and with six months to run on his United deal the club will allow him to seek pastures new if the right offer comes in.

“I'm not sure if Timo is going to stay or [if] he's going to take an option now,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“He's not played enough, so of course he's been allowed to speak to clubs, with a view to leaving now in January.

"It's difficult when you've got good players, talented players, and you can't give them game time. He's now at the stage where he needs to go and play again.

“It might be [at the] end of January, or it might be in the summer that he finds somewhere else. So he's working hard, Tim, he's ready for a move for any club that he feels ready for.”

Fosu-Mensah has made just 30 appearances for the Red Devils since making his debut against Arsenal in February 2016.

The defender has had subsequent loan spells at Crystal Palace and Fulham.

But they have not enhanced his chances of becoming a fixture at Old Trafford and a move away is imminent.

He is likely to be one of several departures with Solskjaer already giving the green light for both Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo to leave.

The goalkeeper was angered that he wasn't moved on in the summer.

Meanwhile young defender Brandon Williams is thought to be seeking a loan move away.
