Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Southampton’s injury-time equaliser will not derail Manchester United’s Champions League bid.
A 2-2 draw at Old Trafford saw United fail to capitalise on defeats to top four rivals Chelsea and Leicester over the weekend.
They remain in fifth place, but Champions League qualification remains in their hands.
They face Leicester on the final day of the season, knowing three more wins will guarantee a top-four finish.
After Michael Obafemi’s last gasp goal, Solskjaer said: “I have to say the mentality of the boys has been brilliant, we’ve had some setbacks over the season and this is another challenge.
“I’m confident in their mentality, but we have to take disappointment and positives when you win games. This was one of the last kicks. It’s part of football and we’ve learnt a hard lesson today.
“We’ll put it right. The boys I trust them.”
Stuart Armstrong gave Southampton the lead, but goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial put United in control before half time.
Rashford and Martial had chances to add to their lead before Obafemi’s strike.
Solskjaer insists the results around them had no effect on the game.
“I don’t think any of our players have been thinking about what Chelsea have done this weekend,” he said. “We all play against the same teams and have three games to go through.”
On the nature of Southampton’s equaliser, Solskjaer added: “Its the worst time to concede, but it happens in football. You have just got to be strong and take it because we have won so many games that way.
“It’s football. It’s part of the learning process for this team, to be sat there and be really disappointed when you think you have got the three points in the bag. “But we probably didn’t’t deserve the three points today because they are a good team and they deserved to get something from the game.
“They are a fit side and they run a lot at pace, we never got the rhythm in our passing today especially after 2-1.
“We created lots of chances and played some fantastic football at times. Anthony has got two big chances he creates for himself and the goals were very good.”
