Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Man Utd to cope best with 'unfair' festive schedule

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reckons his Manchester United side are best equipped to cope with the quick turnaround in the festive fixture list.

United are in action at Burnley on Saturday, just 48 hours after beating Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford to revive their hopes of securing a top-four place.

Many bosses have complained at the lack of recovery time between matches over the Christmas period, claiming it is putting too heavy a burden on players.

While Solskjaer agrees the physical and mental strain on players is too much with such a tight schedule, he believes his squad can cope with the situation better than other Premier League sides.

“I don’t think it's fair on the boys at all,” said Solskjaer.

“I don’t think it's fair to be expected to perform at the best of your level, both mentally and physically, 48 hours after you've played.

“But I think we're in the best position to perform on Saturday because the game was over after 45 minutes and we're young.

“We have a great chance against Burnley to perform at the best level.

“When you're 23, which was the average age of the outfield starting players today, that will make it easier for us to recover than Burnley.

“Burnley played until the end against Everton , but we were done after 45 minutes and used the second-half as recovery.

“But it's not fair, especially when a game at Watford has just gone and there will also be a game New Years’ Day.

“Two games in three days is possible once in a while, but not when it's as tight as this.

“But I'm impressed by everyone in the dressing-room because they're so professional, looking after themselves.

“That's why they could stay at home last night. There was no point them being in a hotel. I trust them. They know the right thing to do.”

Despite defeats to Crystal Palace , West Ham , Newcastle, Bournemouth and Watford in the first half of the season, United are just four points off fourth spot.

Solskjaer is desperate for a consistent winning run, to avoid the race for the Champions League spots going down to the final day of the season.

“If we get consistent, it's not going to go down to the wire,” said Solskjaer.

“We should get into the top four without waiting for the last game against Leicester .

“But it might go down to the last game, who knows?

“I still expect a lot from this team this year. I expect them to be ready for Burnley because they're next.

“The players know what we expect. We have to make it hard to play against us.

“We can’t play tippy-tappy football. We can’t, at this moment in time, play like Manchester City . It's only City that can do that.

“We have to show more energy, drive, urgency and selflessness in every single game. That's the way we have to play at the moment.

“The boys know what I expect on Saturday and I know everything is going to be done for the players and by the players to be prepared.”
