Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back-tracked on Romelu Lukaku theory with Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Jamie Carragher has questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's thought process behind signing Cristiano Ronaldo following his stance on Romelu Lukaku.

In his first summer as Manchester United boss the Norwegian offloaded the striker, who would join Inter Milan.

Lukaku had been a constant source of goals at Old Trafford, scoring 27 times in his first season when he was a regular, but his style of play didn't work for Solskjaer.

He wanted his team to press from the front and few questioned his decision to offload the prolific Belgian.

Now though, with Ronaldo his main man in the final third, Carragher has raised issue with the logic.

Lukaku, much like Ronaldo, is not renowned for his pressing and work rate off the ball, but it begs the question why Solskjaer has gone full circle with his recruitment.

Carragher said on the Overlap: "This idea that he (Ronaldo) doesn't press right now. Listen is pressing more important than goals - well I think goals are more important.

"He'll get lots of goals, but if you go back to the start of when Ole came in. The big thing about getting rid of Lukaku was that he doesn't press - yes he'll get goals - but he doesn't press.

"Now everyone was almost behind that. This is the way the game is going with Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino.

"So Man Utd have got to do that but we can't do that with Lukaku. So you lose Lukaku, who would've always been among the top scorers.

"Now you've replaced him with, I'm not saying he (Ronaldo) is exactly like Lukaku, but he's going to score loads of goals. Now if he doesn't score I'm not sure what he gives you, given the age he is.

"But I remember Ole saying about his reasons for getting rid of Lukaku, he's now almost got an identical player at the top of the pitch."

United are yet to hit top gear despite Ronaldo starting impressively in front of goal.

Solskjaer is still seeking a winning formula, but has been given a selection warning by Gary Neville ahead of a crunch month of games.

The Belgian meanwhile is now back in the Premier League with Chelsea, following a summer move to Stamford Bridge.

He scored on his debut and is seen by many as the missing piece of the jigsaw for Thomas Tuchel, who is planning a title charge with the Blues.

Chelsea currently sit top of the league, two points ahead of United, with the two playing each other for the first time in late November.
