Ole Gunnar Solskjaer assesses Manchester United's slump in form ahead of Newcastle clash

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes there are plenty of away games his side 'should have won' in their run of poor form.

United are enduring a horrid slump in confidence and performance levels which stretches back to their remarkable comeback victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Coincidentally, the trip to Paris in early March was the last time Solskjaer's side won a match away from home, a run that has now stretched to 10 matches.

In that time United have travelled to the likes of Everton, Huddersfield, Southampton and West Ham, with the latest failure to win on the road coming in Thursday's dull 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar.

United travel to St. James' Park on Sunday to take on Newcastle United - a team in an even worse state of affairs than themselves - and Solskjaer is hopeful they'll finally be able to end their run of negative results.

"Yeah, definitely. I've always enjoyed my games there, great stadium," the Norwegian said when asked by MUTV if he was looking forward to the trip.

"I haven't enjoyed the results all the time, I've been there on a 5-0 defeat but I've also won, was it 6-2? We've won some great wins and victories over there and last season as well we got a win there.

"It's a place we're looking forward to going, we're searching for our first away win for a little while.

"I hope they're going to say after the game 'it's not a good game for us.' I can't think about Steve, or Newcastle of course, we have to go there and put a performance on and get a result. We have to start picking up points and we go up there trying to win the game.

"Should have won, not could have won. That's just this period we're going though now, the penalty we should have had against Alkmaar that could have stopped this talk. Lets hope we can smile and talk about finally we won a game.

"We've travelled and of course some of them will have played 90 minutes here and will play on Sunday but they're professionals and they'll recover. We've got great staff around them, all the little details will be taken care of so we'll be 100 per cent fit."
