Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Anthony Martial could be out for season with knee injury

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial could be out for the rest of the season through injury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted.

Martial hobbled out of France's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan during the international break with a knee problem.

He tried to play on but had to be substituted and missed Les Bleus' 1-0 win over Bosnia subsequently.

The Red Devils boss said: "Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing, especially when reports and signals from there [France] are it wasn’t anything serious, but it looks a bad one.”

Martial's prognosis will come as a surprise to many after comments from France boss Didier Deschamps prior to the Bosnia game.

Deschamps refused to rule Martial out of the qualifier, and although he didn't play, it seemed like the injury wasn't too serious.

"Anthony has a small issue on his knee. Nothing is decided yet," said Deschamps - who led France to the World Cup in 2018.

"He won’t be taking part in the training session a bit later. We’ll see tomorrow.

"Anything serious has been dismissed. We’ve run some tests, but there’s still the pain, and having travelled as long as we have, that hasn’t helped."

Martial has struggled in front of goal for United this season, scoring just seven times in 36 appearances in all competitions.
