Oldham Athletic confirm former Bolton Wanderers skipper David Wheater no longer part of first team squad

Former Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater is no longer part of the first team squad at Oldham Athletic moving forward, the Boundary Park club has confirmed.

The ex-Wanderers defender spent eight years at the University of Bolton Stadium after joining from Middlesbrough in 2011.

He remained with Wanderers for much of the following decade which spanned playing in the Premier League, Championship and League One.

During that time, Wheater turned out more than 230 times for Wanderers and scored 16 goals.

He departed the club last summer and later signed for Oldham, a team Bolton will come up against in League Two this season.

He signed for the Latics on a one-year deal with an option of a second year.

He turned out a total of 35 times for Oldham last season in all competitions in a season which was curtailed in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Latics ended the campaign in 19th when the table was decided on a points per game basis.

Wheater has been involved in pre-season training with the Latics, but is yet to play a competitive game so far in the 2020/21 campaign.

And Oldham have now confirmed that neither Wheater nor goalkeeper Gary Woods are now part of the Latics first team squad.

The decision has been made to allow the Latics to concentrate on the 2020/21 campaign, the club states, but no other explanation over why both players are not part of the squad anymore has been given.

A club statement read: "Oldham Athletic can confirm that players David Wheater and Gary Woods will no longer be a part of the first team squad.

"Due to matters that neither party is in a position to disclose, the decision has been made to ensure the football club can now focus on the season ahead.

"No further comment will be made by the club at this time."
