Penke, a 19-year-old female Rocky Mountain goat believed to be the only in Japan, died on Aug. 10. Her lifespan might be the longest on record among zoos in Japan, although this rare species is said to be able to live between 10 and 15 years in captivity, according to Kanazawa Zoological Gardens in Yokohama, where she was bred.
Penke had been the last of this species kept by a domestic zoo since June 2014, when another female in the zoo died.
Born in May 2001 at the zoo, Penke's gentle behavior and cuddly form was much loved.
Penke had been in the backyard since July last year due to her old age, but since last month she could not easily rise. A breeder found her dead on the morning of Aug. 10.
The zoo plans to set up a stand beside its indoor exhibition hall for those who want to lay flowers to commemorate her until Aug. 30.
