'Oldest living Irish person' celebrates 110th birthday in care home

A woman thought to be the oldest living Irish person in the world has celebrated her 110th birthday.

Margaret Reed was born in a countryside village in Northern Ireland in 1910 as one of nine children in her household.

She later moved to Hampshire during World War Two to work in a secret role for the Royal Air Force before marrying and settling in Cornwall.

Mum Margaret turned 110 on Monday surrounded by staff at her care home who held a tea and cake party.

She puts her extraordinary age down to a life of no booze.

Records show Margaret is the oldest living Irish person anywhere in the UK or Ireland.

She is also possibly the oldest Irish person in world.

She also says getting outdoors and belief in God have helped her longevity.

She marked the milestone with video calls from her family - who she sadly couldn't see due to the coronavirus lockdown.

A mum-of-one, Margaret used to grow primroses and box them up to be sent to London on the train to be sold at flower markets.

She now lives at Priory Court nursing home in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

When asked about the secret to reaching old age, she said: "No drinking alcohol, plenty of fresh air, keeping busy and my religious beliefs."

Home manager Angela Madden added: "Margaret has lived with us for five years and is very much part of the family here.

"She is a remarkable lady, very independent and active.

"110 years old is a truly extraordinary milestone to reach and we wish her very many congratulations."

Margaret is listed as the 17th oldest person in Britain.
