Old Whitley Bay boozer could be transformed into "luxury, high-end" seafront houses

This is what houses planned for the former site of a demolished pub could look like.

The former Whisky Bends pub on the Promenade in Whitley Bay had been derelict for many years and became a blight on the landscape.

The building was bought by North Tyneside Council in 2014 and was knocked down last year as part of plans to regenerate the coastline.

The authority put the site up for sale and invited developers to make offers for the plot of land.

At the time North Tyneside's Mayor, Norma Redfearn , described it as a "fantastic opportunity for the right developer".

Now, Compass Developments Ltd has exchanged contracts to buy the site and intends to build three four-bedroom town-houses, each with two parking spaces.

The builder has submitted a planning application to the authority outlining its plans, and these are set to be decided on by 10th of May.

Graham Anderson, chairman of Compass Developments Ltd, said: "Whitley Bay is a really up and coming area so we were delighted to be chosen as the developer for this great location.

Whitley Bay promenade repair begins today

"There is a need for a luxury, high-end development overlooking the seafront - these will be upmarket properties that provide fantastic views.

"The town-houses will be in keeping with the local area and contribute to Whitley Bay's continued regeneration."

Coun Redfearn added: "I'm delighted that a high-quality housing scheme is being brought forward for this prominent site.

"Compass Developments has delivered some excellent housing schemes in the borough so it's great news that they will be contributing to the transformation of Whitley Bay."
