Old Trafford residents 'terrified' as they're told to leave their homes in bomb scare - police have now declared the area as safe

Residents have spoken of their shock after a block of flats were evacuated in a bomb squad scare.

Police were called to reports of a man making threats at a property on Chester Road, Old Trafford at around 11.55am on Thursday.

A bomb squad and emergency service crews were on the scene while police continued their search.

Around 40 apartments in the block were evacuated, with a help centre set up nearby for those residents affected.

Police say the building has been confirmed as safe, and that residents have been allowed back into their homes.

One Chester Road resident said: “I was in town and at 11am I was walking back and police said to me “you are not allowed to come back in.”

"People were allowed to take their pets but had to leave. These are expensive flats and are owned.

"We might be looking at staying in a hotel overnight. I’m not personally worried but I know a lot of residents are very worried. The police have taken all our numbers.

"It’s a bit scary for some of the residents.”

Another resident added: “I live in the flat directly below the one being searched. I was leaving at 5.30am this morning and police were there. Forensics and plain clothes police arrived from 10.20am.

"At 11am they evacuated everybody. Everybody is terrified. We have had ongoing issues with the flats for months and we are scared.”

It's not clear when residents will be allowed back inside their homes.

Emergency services and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit have left the scene on Thursday evening.

One Old Trafford resident said: “I pass those apartments every day and so it’s shocking to see this.

"My friend phoned me and asked if I had been evacuated and I wondered what she was talking about. She had had to go and get her child from the school nearby.

"It’s scary and I just thank the Lord my kids are grown and gone. You just never know what’s going on on the doorstep.”

In an updated statement posted on GMP Stretford Twitter account, GMP said: "Following an evacuation and a search at an address on Chester Road, EOD have confirmed that the area is safe and there is no wider risk to the public.

"Around 40 apartments were evacuated earlier today and officers alongside colleagues from GMFRS attended the scene."

Chief Inspector Lee Parker, GMP's critical incident manager, added: "We understand that this incident will have caused some concern in the community but I'd like to reassure them that following extensive searches and a thorough investigation there is no wider threat to the public.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their patience throughout the day and anyone concerned can speak to my officers."
