Old seaplane spotted performing over Wirral

An old seaplane was spotted flying ‘really low’ over parts of Wirral today.

The aircraft was captured on camera by plane spotter, Philly Morris, 48, who said it was performing loops and circles.

The 48-year-old said he was in his kitchen when he heard a plane sound like it was in trouble.

He ran out to see what all the fuss was about and realised it was an old floatplane performing manoeuvres in the sky above Wirral.

Speaking to the ECHO, Philly said: “I’m a bit of a plane spotter. I used to drive my daughter to Manchester Airport and she used to take pictures as she loves planes.

“I’m also ex military, so I know what’s not right in terms of sound from a plane or when something is low. I was in my kitchen and it sounded like a plane was in trouble, a propeller plane, so I ran out in my garden.

“It went really low, making the engine go higher and lower and up and down. It kept circling really low around Spital and then it would go up high and then down low.”

Philly and his daughter tracked the plane's movements from FlightRader24 which showed the aircraft's flight path from its original destination.

The app shows a yellow line which indicates the flight path and as soon as it hits Bebington the yellow lines turn into circles.

Philly added: “I didn’t think it was in any trouble and I noticed on my daughters phone app that it's from Hawarden Airport. I don’t know how it did that because it’s a seaplane.

“It was just circling around Spital and Bebington going up high and low and all the kids, because it’s lockdown, you can hear them all in the back garden screaming.

“I didn’t think it was in any trouble but I thought it was peculiar. To be so low and doing those low maneuvers. He was there for a good 20 minutes.

“It would head towards the Mersey but then it would turn back when it got close. I don’t know why this area was special but it circled around us for ages and then flew off.

“The kids were loving it.”
