'Old school' Scott McTominay is Manchester United's stand-out player and has found his leadership qualities

Manchester United legend Darren Fletcher has raved about Scott McTominay following his excellent performance against Arsenal last night.

United were under par in the 1-1 draw but the Scotland ace scored his side's goal and was their best player, picking up the man of the match award.

McTominay, who will be named in Steve Clarke 's squad for upcoming games against Russia and San Marino, has impressed since being given a prominent role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's central midfield at the beginning of the season.

And Fletcher feels the determination and mental strength of the 22-year-old has helped him overcome adversity in his United career to become a leader on the pitch despite his tender years.

He told talksPORT : "The positives at Manchester United this season has been the young players, especially Scott McTominay who has been a stand-out player from day one. He drives the team forward and tries to make things happen.

He continued: "He looks like the first name on the team sheet. He's been fantastic. The United games I've seen, at Leicester it was a bit of a flat game and he went thundering into a tackle and got the crowd up. He's a little bit old school, he's got drive, he gets on the ball and doesn't hide.

"His goal was fantastic and he's starting to find his voice as well. I see him with his arms pointing at people and things like that. It's fantastic to see. He's the one that's got confidence in his game now and has taken the onus on himself to drag the team with him.

"I love his interviews after games as well, speaking about being a United player and what it takes and saying all the right things as well.

"Credit to the lad because he was getting a little bit of stick when he first came into the team as everyone does - the pressure's big - but he's come through that now and he's definitely leading that Manchester United team and others should look to him to see how to do it  get your head down and get stuck in, get on the ball and show arrogance.

"You're a Manchester united player - stick your chest out."
