Old Sainsbury's site earmarked for hundreds of new homes in £100m town centre scheme

A former Sainsbury's site in Stockport town centre could be transformed into more than 560 apartments and town houses, according to newly-submitted plans.

Amstone Ventures is behind the proposals for the land in Warren Street which would feature a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats if approved.

The development, called No.1 Knightsbridge, would reach up to 15 storeys and include 563 homes as well as a communal garden and surrounding greenspaces.

Work on the 3.28-acre site could start in late 2022 if the plans are backed by Stockport Borough Council.

Martin Halsey, operations director of Amstone, said: "Stockport is a town centre that is changing rapidly and we’re excited to be part of it with such a significant site, close to the historic town centre.

"We can see a vibrant and buzzing residential community forming as a number of schemes come together to contribute to Stockport’s ambitious residential plan.

"To realise our vision, we have engaged the same team that developed the landmark BTR scheme for Grainger at Clippers Quay in Salford Quays – led by architect Leach Rhodes Walker to bring a best-in-class residential development to Stockport."

Amstone snapped up the site in March 2021.

Speaking at the time, Cllr David Meller, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "It is great to see the former Sainsbury’s site being brought back into use so quickly, which shows the confidence so many have in our town centre.

"Amstone join the list of developers who are helping to deliver the regeneration of the town centre and this complements our ambitious plans for the town and our reputation as great place to live, work, enjoy and do business."

Amstone’s professional team on the Stockport BTR project are Leach Rhodes Walker (architect); Deloitte (planning consultant); Layers.Studio (landscape architect); Cumming Group (costs consultant).
