Old Royal British Legion club in Bristol to be turned into flats

An old Royal British Legion clubhouse in Staple Hill is being turned into flats.

Once a haven for soldiers, many of whom served in the Gloucestershire Regiment, the building was put up for sale last year.

Armed Forces veterans previously used the clubhouse to meet with other members of the military community.

But the club is one of three Royal British Legion venues in Bristol to have been closed in recent years.

Two other sites, in Long Ashton and Westbury-on-Trym, have also shut.

Property agent Alder King has sold the 0.2-acre Staple Hill site to a private developer for more than £315,000.

The new owner is now considering options for converting the property into residential apartments.

In 2017, a popular Remembrance Parade in Staple Hill did not go ahead because of the club’s closure.

A spokesman for the RBL said at the time: “The longstanding position of the Legion is that local Remembrance parades and services are a civic responsibility.

“It is the responsibility of local authorities to accept event organiser status including responsibility for funding, health and safety, and insurance.”

Alder King also sold the Royal British Legion venue in Long Ashton in 2018 to Bristol family company Prelon Construction.

The firm bought the property for more than the £550,000 guide price and is planning to turn it into nine three-bedroom properties.

Plans for the development, which have been submitted to North Somerset Council, will see 18 parking spaces provided along with cycle storage facilities for two bikes per property.

The club at Providence Lane closed its doors in September 2016, leaving the local legion branch without a home for the first time in 80 years.

Alder King and its joint agent Maggs & Allen are now marketing a third clubhouse on College Road in Westbury on Trym.

The 2,060 sq ft two-storey property will be sold via public auction on 18 April at the County Cricket Ground in Bristol.

A Royal British Legion spokeswoman said: "The proceeds of these sales will be used to go back into supporting the Armed Forces community in and around the local area in accordance with the Property Trust.”
