Old Market Square fenced off for repair and maintenance works ahead of lockdown lifting

A large section of Nottingham's Old Market Square has been fenced off in lockdown for a spring makeover.

This is part of "on-going highway maintenance works" on Old Market Square, the city council confirmed.

Workers are replacing granite plinths on the north side of the square.

The south end of the Square was done last year.

Councillor Sam Webster, who is the city council's portfolio holder for the city centre, tweeted: "Repairs and maintenance to Old Market Square in preparation for the Spring - wooden balustrade re-waxed, granite terrace repairs and additional planting taking place shortly to the raised beds."

Shoppers hope the works will make the area more welcoming as people hopefully head back into the city centre in the coming weeks once lockdown restrictions begin to lift.

Laura Martin, 30, of Sneinton, said: "The Square gets a lot of wear and tear from the events on it and numbers of people who gather here so it's nice to see it getting some TLC.

"I hope it looks nice for coming back properly in the spring."

Alex Jones, 20, added: "It's good to see it being worked on, I'm sure it'll look nicer."
