Old Guard 3 Movie In The Works? Plot, Release Date And Will Charlize Theron Continue To Reprise Role?

The sequel ends on a cliffhanger, sparking speculation about a third film, but no official confirmation or release date has been announced.

Fans were left hanging after the cliffhanger ending of The Old Guard 2, sparking widespread questions about a potential third film. The sequel's unresolved finale has ignited speculation and hope, but official confirmation remains elusive.

Many enjoyed the sequel's storyline, but with the story set up for more, everyone is asking: is Old Guard 3 really going to be made?

Is There a Confirmed Old Guard 3 Movie?

As of now, there is no official announcement confirming the development of Old Guard 3. The film's creators have hinted at a trilogy, but nothing concrete has been revealed. In 2020, Greg Rucka, the writer behind the original comics and the films, stated that he envisioned a three-part story. He expressed hope that if the sequel was successful, Netflix would continue the franchise.

However, the actors and director have offered mixed signals. Henry Golding and Marwan Kenzari, who star in the films, have expressed enthusiasm but avoided promising a third instalment. Golding mentioned that audience response would influence future decisions. Kenzari added that everyone involved hopes for more, but nothing is certain yet.

Director Victoria Mahoney, who helmed both movies, defended the ending's cliffhanger but did not comment on future plans. She highlighted her focus on the characters' current story and explained she's not involved in ongoing negotiations. Her departure from the franchise's potential future leaves many questions unanswered about what's next.

Plot and Release Date: What Could a New Film Cover?

If a third film does happen, it is expected to pick up where the second left off. The ending saw Andy (Charlize Theron) and Quynh (Vân Veronica Ngô) planning to rescue their captured friends from the villainous Discord (Uma Thurman). The unresolved tension suggests a sequel could explore their mission and confrontations with the antagonist.

Theron has hinted that the story would continue to delve into the characters' lives and the conflicts introduced. Still, she has been cautious about confirming any specifics. She acknowledged that she has no certainty about what a third film might look like, emphasising the unpredictable nature of the franchise's future.

Regarding timing, no release date has been set. If Netflix decides to proceed, it could take a year or more to develop the script, cast, and filming schedule alone.

Public Response

Much of the response online has been positive, with many excited to have Charlize Theron back on their screens alongside the Old Guard crew. However, a number are lamenting the cliffhanger ending of the sequel, saying, 'when's part 3 coming out? i'm not immortal i can't wait another five d*mn years!'

Will Charlize Theron Return as Andy?

Theron's involvement remains a key question. She has expressed interest in continuing her role, but she also pointed out the lack of guarantees. Her comments suggest she would be open to reprising Andy if the project moves forward, but nothing is confirmed.

The actress has shown her dedication to the character and franchise, yet she remains realistic about the industry's unpredictable nature. Without an official green light, her return hinges on whether Netflix finds the sequel financially viable and creatively worthwhile.

The fate of Old Guard 3 hangs in the balance. Despite the strong possibility hinted at by creators and stars, no firm plans are in place. Fans eager for closure will have to wait for official confirmation from Netflix and the filmmakers.
