Old grave uncovered of two young brothers who died as 'heroes'

A Merseyside grave reveals a tragic tale of two brothers killed during the First World War.

The Battle of the Somme is known as one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the British Army.

The Somme Offensive raged on from July 1 to November 18, 1916.

On July 1 of that year, alone, more than a hundred men from Merseyside were killed.

Those who fought showed remarkable bravery, and are rightly known as "heroes".

During a recent clean-up of Maghull 's only cemetery, at St Andrews Church, resident and parish councillor Ken Hughes uncovered an old grave with a tragic tale.

Two brothers were killed in the same month during the Somme Offensive.

Now only partly legible, the gravestone reads: "In loving memory of Mary Mousley Prescott, died January 2 1936 aged 73 years.

"Also John, beloved husband of the above. Died May 3, 1938, aged 77 years.

"Also their beloved sons.

"Herbert, killed in action July 1, 1916, aged 27 years. And Frank, died of wounds, July 26, 1916, Aged 25 years."

Cllr Hughes is a full-time stonemason by profession, and volunteered to tidy up the graveyard and prevent any further deterioration.

Other local volunteers have trimmed weeds, cut hedges and painted the rusting metal staircase.

Cllr Hughes told the ECHO : "The clean-up of the cemetery is one part of an ongoing project to tidy up the local area.

"It really is a tragic tale, and quite poignant we discovered it as we approach Remembrance Day."
