#14 Old Dominion
The Old Dominion Monarchs enter their first NCAA Tournament since 2011 thanks to a 26-8 regular season record and the Conference USA Championship. Head coach Jeff Jones has coached all season while receiving treatment for prostate cancer, and his players have rallied around Jones like never before, playing hard for their coach every single night and joining the Big Dance for the first time in eight years. Senior guard BJ Stith, the C-USA Player of the Year, is the Monarchs biggest hope for a Cinderella run. And huge wins over Syracuse and VCU this season prove that ODU have a Cinderella run in them.
#3 Purdue
The Purdue Boilermakers enter the NCAA Tournament with tremendous expectations to make a deep run and maybe even reach the Final Four. But recent history hasn’t been kind: Purdue has not reached the Elite 8 since 2000, and their last Final Four appearance was in 1980. So what’s the reason for optimism this time? The same as the last few years: talent. The Boilermakers have very good players all over the floor, and they proved it this season with a 23-9 regular season record to share the Big Ten championship. They weren’t successful in the Big Ten tournament, losing in the quarterfinals, but that won’t change the perception or expectation for this team. They are good enough for a deep run. We’ll see if they can make it.
