Old Dalmarnock school site to be transformed into more than 100 flats

More than 100 flats will be built in the south east of the city as part of plans which include converting a former school into housing.

Spectrum Properties has received permission from Glasgow City Council to turn Strathclyde Public School into flats and erect three new-build residential blocks.

The scheme, which will see 111 flats built on Carstairs Street, also includes 109 car parking spaces.

A planning report states the applicant aims to “create a high quality residential environment centred around a shared piazza adjacent to the Smart Bridge which links Dalmarnock to Shawfield across the River Clyde”.

The former school playground will be the location of one of the new build blocks as well as a communal area “integrating parking requirements”.

Spectrum Properties’ application was submitted in September 2015 but approved by the council this week.

A planning report states: “Located adjacent to the Barrowfield Works factories, the school provided education for the families of the east end industrial workers.

“The expansion of the area as an important industrial zone within Glasgow led to the school being used for its original purpose for 70 years, closing it’s doors to pupils in 1974.

“Unlike many other Glasgow schools that were allowed to fall into disrepair, the building was refurbished in 1976 and opened as the Dalmarnock Adult Training Centre.

“After another refurbishment in 1999, the building was converted into 45 office units with central shared areas by the current owner Spectrum Properties and opened as the Strathclyde Business Centre.”

The school was designed by Glasgow architects John McKissack & Son and built in 1903.

There will be 34 flats in the former school building, with the new builds made up of 24, 26 and 27 units.
