New build: Kent. We like a bit of clapboard at the Guardian, and this five-bedroom beauty in Snodland has it in abundance. However, the marketing picture shows a steep cliff bank right behind the house, and checking with the estate agent reveals this is going nowhere: the development is in Holborough Lakes, the site of an old chalk pit. Determined to look on the bright side, the agency blurb says: “Unlike many new homes it’s not overlooked at the rear and this adds to the feeling of seclusion.” It’s on the market for £399,000.

New build: Surrey. The Monet Home 92 (please! What makes them think it’s OK to nick the name of one of the world’s finest impressionists for a housing development in Redhill?) is a four-storey, four-bedroom mid-terrace townhouse, on the market for £449,995. The ground floor is open-plan, comprising the kitchen, living and dining area, with a separate lounge on the first floor and the bedrooms above. The fourth floor bedroom could be used as a garden room instead as it has a wrap around terrace.
