Old and new homes – in pictures

Old and New 200612: Historic home in Edinburgh
Historic home: Edinburgh. The £1.05m price tag for this Georgian townhouse in Stockbridge might seem a bit steep, but you do get lots for your money, including access to an enormous and very well tended communal garden, alongside a private garden of your own. The house itself has four double bedrooms, a spacious reception room on the ground floor plus a grand drawing room on the first floor with three full height windows.

Old and New 200612: Historic home in Lancaster
Historic home: Lancaster. The small frontage to this terraced victorian home in Lancaster is deceptive: inside are four double bedrooms and two decently sized reception rooms. The property has been modernised throughout, but the owner has kept the traditional features, including cornicing, picture rails, stained glass, Victorian doors and a tiled hallway floor. The back courtyard is small but private and nicely done. Cost: £179,950.

Old and New 200612: Historic home in Lincolnshire
Historic home: Lincolnshire. You get a lot for your money with this detached cottage in Friskney, near Boston. The £345,000 cottage has four bedrooms, three reception rooms, and a large kitchen/breakfast room with separate utility room. There’s also a separate cottage formed from a Lincolnshire parlour house, modern studio and large barn. The garden is massive and mature - plenty of scope for a keen gardener.

Old and New 200612: New build in Bristol
New build: Bristol. The outside of the new Castle Wharf development on the site of the old Courage Brewery in Bristol might look like a bog standard block, but the views from the one- and two-bedroom apartments over the Castle Park are delightful. The block is just 15 minutes’ walk from Cabot Circus and 12 minutes form Temple Meads Station. The apartments have Paula Rosa kitchens with Zanussi accessories, Villeroy & Boch baths, oak veneered flooring and lifts to all floors. From £149,000 for a one bedroom apartment.

Old and New 200612: New build in Kent
New build: Kent. We like a bit of clapboard at the Guardian, and this five-bedroom beauty in Snodland has it in abundance. However, the marketing picture shows a steep cliff bank right behind the house, and checking with the estate agent reveals this is going nowhere: the development is in Holborough Lakes, the site of an old chalk pit. Determined to look on the bright side, the agency blurb says: “Unlike many new homes it’s not overlooked at the rear and this adds to the feeling of seclusion.” It’s on the market for £399,000.

Old and New 200612: New build in Surrey
New build: Surrey. The Monet Home 92 (please! What makes them think it’s OK to nick the name of one of the world’s finest impressionists for a housing development in Redhill?) is a four-storey, four-bedroom mid-terrace townhouse, on the market for £449,995. The ground floor is open-plan, comprising the kitchen, living and dining area, with a separate lounge on the first floor and the bedrooms above. The fourth floor bedroom could be used as a garden room instead as it has a wrap around terrace.
