Old and new homes – in pictures

Old and New: New: Kent
New-build home: Kent. This £410,000 family home in West Malling spreads over three floors, with an en suite master bedroom across the whole top storey. Go down a floor and you will find three more bedrooms (one en suite) and a family bathroom, while downstairs provides a living room and an open plan kitchen/diner opening through French doors on to the garden. The development is surrounded by open green space and there are infant and junior schools within easy reach.

Old and New: Historic home: Leicestershire
Historic home: Leicestershire. Old Glebe Farm is believed to date back to 1645 and the local builders who renovated it and its surrounding buildings have endeavoured to retain some of its character. It’s there in the exposed beams that cross the ceilings of the living room, lounge and kitchen, and the brick chimney breasts in a couple of the rooms. But life is made more comfortable with mod cons such as underfloor heating and spot lighting. Decor is neutral downstairs and in the four bedrooms, but the shaped baths may not be to everybody’s taste. Cost: £465,000.

Old and New: Historic home: Perthshire
Historic home: Perthshire. The agents use the word ‘substantial’ to describe this Victorian villa 16 miles from Perth, and it’s difficult to disagree. The main house and outbuildings that make up the Cedars offer 4,242 square foot of living space, which could be configured to offer as many as six bedrooms if someone is happy to sleep on the ground floor. Upstairs are five bedrooms and a family bathroom, downstairs a dining room, large kitchen and two living rooms. A sweeping driveway adds drama, as does some of the interior paintwork – you may want to invest in a few tins of something more neutral. Offers over £395,000 will be considered.

Old and New: New: Northamptonshire
New build home: Northamptonshire. The four-bed detached Hanbury house is made for commuters: the Duston development is a stone’s throw from both the M1 and Northampton train station. With the developer boasting about the property’s green credentials – it scores an efficiency rating of B – you should probably opt for public transport, but there is a garage if you have a car. The large kitchen doubles as a diner, while a family room is conservatory-esque with its glazed roof. Upstairs are four bedrooms – three of them doubles and one en suite. It’s on the market for £277,950 and the developer is currently offering to take your existing home as part exchange.

Old and New: Historic home: Suffolk
Historic home: Suffolk. It may sound like a pub, but the Crutched Friars near Bury St Edmunds is something much more seemly: a Grade II-listed Tudor property which was once a priory and is believed to be one of the county’s oldest monastic houses. Its lengthy heritage has brought this five-bed home crow-stepped gables and Flemish terracotta plaques, while a modern renovation has created a green oak hall and oak staircase. A 35ft drawing and dining area dominates the ground floor and gives plenty of room for stately feasts, while a snug offers a more cosy place to hang out. A garden room looks out over your four acres of land, which include remnants of an old chapel. Cost: £825,000.
