Old and new homes – in pictures

Old and new 9/11/2011: Historic home in Hertfordshire
Historic home: Hertfordshire. We like the brick floor running through the hall and kitchen of this two-bed period cottage in Standon, but you may need sunglasses on to go in the bathroom: the tiling is a bit busy, to say the least. There’s a very long – 118’ – but narrow garden at the back, with which an imaginative gardener could do a lot. Yours for £289,950.

Old and new 9/11/2011: Historic home in Gloucestershire
Historic home: Gloucestershire. This three-bed stone cottage in Alderton, Tewkesbury, is deceptively large with a lounge and separate dining room-cum-family room and a 23' kitchen. For £295,000 you also get three decent double bedrooms, and the garden which, while a bit rugged looking, is a respectable 60’ long. The only disadvantage is the bathroom is on the ground floor.

Old and new 9/11/2011: New build in Scorton
New build: Scorton. Although Woodacre Hall Farm Mews is a barn conversion, both the exterior and interior of this four-bedder are strangely bland. There’s not much in the way of original features: only the fourth bedroom on the second floor has the beams and timbers you might expect throughout. But you do get plenty of space for your £375,000.

Old and new 9/11/2011: New build near Skipton
New build: North Yorkshire. It’s better to concentrate on the stunning view from the back of this three-bed barn conversion near Skipton, because the back garden is still a building site. But the inside looks bright, clean and reasonably spacious, with nice stone detail dotted about. It shares septic tank drainage with a nearby pub – it would be wise to check the terms for emptying the tank before committing to purchase. The price tag is £229,500.

Old and new 9/11/2011: New build in Christchurch
New build: Christchurch. The uber-sleek kitchen in this four-bed house in Barton on Sea is made for keen followers of Come Dine With Me: you could chat to your guests while whipping up the pudding thanks to the open-plan design. But perish the thought of letting a muddy pawed dog or sticky fingered child in here. The £444,950 property is one of nine three-storey homes, all near the cliff and benefiting from great sea views.
