Old and new homes – in pictures

Old/New 01022012: New-build home in Kensal Green, London
New build: London. £399,995 might seem a lot for a one-bed flat, but this one in Kensal Green, north London, is a stunner. The kitchen and bathroom look recently and tastefully refurbished, the flat is in good decorative order throughout, and it boasts a fabulous balcony. Just a shame it overlooks what looks like a dump for used car tyres.

Old/New 01022012: New-build home in Downley, Buckinghamshire
New build: Buckinghamshire. This four-bed terrace in Downley, near High Wycombe, looks pretty bog standard fare from the front. But step inside and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the light, spacious interior with a sleek and well-designed kitchen and an interesting decked terrace reached via bi-fold doors from the lounge. On the market for £415,000.

Old/New 01022012: New-build home in Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire
New build: Hertfordshire. At last, a new three-bed house that isn’t trying to masquerade as an old one. The rooms of the £390,000 Causeway at Bassingbourn, near Royston, are all a good size, with a large kitchen-cum-dining and family room and a separate living room on the ground floor, plus three good double bedrooms and the family bathroom on the first. The master bedroom has a dressing room as well as en suite bathroom. The back garden is completely bare – have fun!

Old/New 01022012: Historic home in Market Lavington, Wiltshire
Historic home: Wiltshire. Get some decent furniture into this two-bed cottage in Market Lavington, near Devizes, on the Salisbury Plain, and it will look just gorgeous. It has plenty of nice details, including exposed timbers and stone, and lovely fireplaces in the living room and kitchen. The back garden is a decent size with lovely views over adjacent fields, and has been left pretty much alone so there is scope for a keen gardener to create something really special. On the market for £170,000.

Old/New 01022012: Historic home in Totland Bay, Isle of Wight
Historic home: Isle of Wight. Although barn conversions fall into the ‘old’ category, this has such clean lines and sleek design, both inside and out, it maybe should be included in the new selection. Located in Totland Bay, Newport, the £339,950 barn has been restored to its full Grade II-listed glory. It includes two bedrooms and a large open-plan ground floor incorporating kitchen and living area. The former barn doors have been replaced with glass, making this area incredibly light.
