Old and new homes – in pictures

Old and new 241012: Historic home in Harrogate, North Yorkshire
Historic home: North Yorkshire. The front of this £319,950 four-bed terrace in Harrogate might be old, but step through the front door and you’re straight into the 21st century. It has been thoroughly renovated in the best possible taste – light and space has been maximised in every room, and if I were buying it I would ask if I could take the furniture too. The only disadvantage is the lack of bathroom on the top floor where two of the bedrooms are, and if you are going to be really picky the back garden is a flagged patio, so not great for growing families.

Old and new 241012: New-build home in Burwash, East Sussex
New build: East Sussex. We are quite accustomed to seeing mean little new builds being thrown up with no space to swing a cat. But the felines who come to live in The Old Orchard development in Burwash had better behave themselves – there are acres of space in the four-bed houses coming on the market in the final phase. The accommodation is spread over three floors, and two of the bedroms are en suite. The only cause for complaint may be the garden, which looks to have been skimped on in favour of a sun room. All of which is yours for £450,000.

Old and new 241012: Historic home in Malmesbury, Wiltshire
Historic home: Wiltshire. Malmesbury is reputed to be England’s oldest borough, and this £225,000 two-bed Grade II-listed cottage, with its stunning beams and exposed brick walls, fits the image perfectly. The 17th-century cottage even features prominently on an early bird’s eye view map of Malmesbury dating from 1646.The cottage is tucked away in a central position, yet has gorgeous views in all directions.

Old and new 241012: New-build home in Widemouth, Cornwall
New build: Cornwall. If you are buying a brand new home here you ideally want to be by the sea. You want to have a bright, well designed home with beautiful wooden floors, and you want it to be eco-friendly and highly insulated. This £425,000 four-bedder in Widemouth near Bude ticks all those boxes plus several more. The lounge, dining room and kitchen are all on the first floor to make the most of the views over the sand dunes to the Atlantic.

Old and new 241012: Historic home in Sutton, Surrey.
Historic home: Surrey. The £299,950 price tag on this three-bed semi in Sutton on the outskirts of south London is so low we rang up to double check it was correct. Inside, the rooms are in good nick –we particularly like the kitchen – and there is a manageable garden for someone wanting green space for kids to kick a ball about. And the fence at the bottom of the garden denotes the boundary with a popular primary school – any children living here must surely be in the catchment area?
