Old and new homes – in pictures

Old and new 110112: New-build home in Great Lumley, County Durham
New build: County Durham. If you would love a period property but can’t face the draughts, leaks and upkeep costs, this home in Great Lumley could be just the thing. On the outside it is Georgian; inside it is sleek and modern with underfloor heating, mood lighting and a huge open-plan kitchen, dining and garden room area. There are four receptions and four double bedrooms. The only downside is the garden, which is plain gravel at the front and lawn at the back. Cost: £499,995.

Old and new 110112: New-build home in Holsworthy, Devon
New build: Devon. This Edwardian-style home on the edge of Holsworthy continues the period theme. Named The Oxford, it is light and spacious with a kitchen and dining area, a lounge and four decent-sized bedrooms. Offers in the region of £270,995 will be considered.

Old and new 110112: New-build home in Bournemouth, Dorset
New build: Dorset. This £229,950 property in Bournemouth would make a great, if slightly expensive, first family home for a couple planning to expand their number. One of the three bedrooms is a single, and there’s just one bathroom, but the ground floor space is open plan with a wide planked wooden floor. Nicely done.

Old and new 110112: Historic home in Ramsgate, Kent
Historic home: Kent. Penistone House is a stunning late-17th-century family home retaining many original features from the period: all the principal rooms have fireplaces, and most still retain the original pannelling and window shutters. The kitchen is slightly jarring in its modernity, but is more than made up for by the grand staircase. The only problem is its location: Ramsgate. Cost: £325,000.

Old and new 110112: Historic home in Chiseldon, Wiltshire
Historic home: Wiltshire. There’s not much evidence, even on the outside, that The Bothy in Chiseldon was ever the home of a farm worker, as its name suggests. And although the interiors of many barn conversions are too cavernous to appeal, we really like the way this one has been styled with a dark wood and steel kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor, and three bedrooms (one en suite) and family bathroom on the first floor. Not one for keen gardeners though: there is just a miniscule courtyard at the back. On the market for £315,000.
