Old and new

Strutt & Parker
Historic home: Shropshire. Inside you could imagine yourself in a stately rectory, yet this semi is a mere £299,000. It was built in 1790 as the wharfinger's house serving the nearby canal. The Georgians liked their rooms large and the two receptions, the kitchen/breakfast room and three bedrooms all fit the bill with dramatic fireplaces, wide landings and big sash windows. The garden is elegantly landscaped, but all to the front. Oswestry is four miles away.

Carter Jonas
Historic home: Hampshire. 17th-century feet once trod through this cottage, but not in this exact spot. The whole place, including the huge inglenook fireplace, has recently been moved across Andover to a plot next to the high street church. Apart from a smart new kitchen you wouldn't know it – the ceilings and walls are still beamed with ancient timbers. There are two large receptions, four bedrooms and a patio garden. Yours for £350,000.

Knight Frank
New build: Devon. The view is the main selling point here: an aerial panorama over the coast unrolls from each of these five apartments, newly arisen on a cliff top in Woolacombe, five minutes from a beach. The indoor attractions include raindrop showers and pebble flooring in the bathrooms, fireplaces and LED mood lighting, designer kitchens and that view again through the glass balconies. One two-bed flat remains at £389,950.

New build: County Durham. Once the station master's house – the disused railway which once served the village of Witton Park runs behind – this has been sliced into three elegant three- and four-bed houses. Each has a large conservatory with rural views, two reception rooms and a kitchen/breakfast room. The downside is you have to share the garden, which lies to the front. Prices start at £175,000.

Bargain of the week: County Durham. The guide price for this mill cottage is £45,000. Once you've spent £100,000 making it habitable it could be worth around £250,000, but it needs a scary amount of work. There are two basic rooms with open fireplaces but no facilities, and a barn which could be converted into accommodation with a mezzanine level. It is in a glorious hillside location three miles from Wolsingham, and a stream runs through its walled garden.
