Why South Dakota Will Win
South Dakota has to hope that Oklahoma is even more “sloppy” than it was in the win over Houston.
The Coyotes have a good passing game and a nice passer in Austin Simmons to keep up the pace – at least a little bit – and they need to bomb away from the start. The Oklahoma defense was okay against Houston, but it’s still not going to be a killer – it can give up big plays if Simmons gets time.
Can Kody Case get going early on? He caught 11 passes for 144 yards and two scores in the 31-17 loss to Montana, and he’s got the ability to have another volume-catch day if OU – coming off a short week – is looking ahead to UCLA.
Why Oklahoma Will Win
After the Jalen Hurts interview following the Houston game, does this seem like a team or a starting quarterback that’s going to take it easy?
The passing game was nearly perfect, the running game was dominant, but now the Sooners have to work on someone other than Hurts handling the work. He protected himself, but the running back combination of Trey Sermon and Kennedy Brooks has to take over.
However, this is a target practice game. The Coyote secondary is awful – it’s about to get lit up in a big, big way – with Hurts not needing to take any chances. Go with the quick passes, let the receivers make things happen on the move, and don’t take a lot of hits – Hurts can do that.

What’s Going To Happen
Hurts and company should be able to put this away in about a half. South Dakota really does have enough offense to get on the board a bit early on, but it doesn’t have a prayer to slow down the Sooner offensive machine once it gets warmed up. OU can call its number, but the second half will be all about the backups.
