Oklahoma City signs guard Markel Brown

Oklahoma City has added Markel Brown to it’s already guard-heavy lineup.

Brown joins a Thunder team that already has six guards on the roster, raising the question of what Brown’s role in Oklahoma City will be this season.

Brown spent the 2018-19 season playing in Turkey for Daruşşafaka. He appeared in 33 games, starting 18, and averaged 7.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 20.4 minutes.

The guard out of Oklahoma State has appeared in 113 total games as a member of both the Brooklyn Nets and the Houston Rockets. Brown has 18 career starts, and an NBA career average of 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in just under 16 minutes per game.

This will be the second go round with the Thunder organization for Brown.

During the 2017-18 season, he appeared in 22 games (starting 20) with the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G League affiliate. Brown averaged 17.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.41 steals in 31.4 minutes a game before signing a Two-Way Contract with the Houston Rockets.

As a member of the Oklahoma City Blue in December 2017, Brown scored a career-high 41 points in a game against the Wisconsin Herd.

He then tied his career-high as part of a double-double in February 2018, leading the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a 117-11 win.

The deal was announced Thursday by Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti. The terms of the contract were not released per team policy.

The Thunder will hold their media day September 31, and begin training camp in Oklahoma City on Oct. 1.
