Okinawa logs record coronavirus cases for 2nd day

Okinawa Prefecture reported 231 new cases of novel coronavirus infections on Saturday, a record high for the second consecutive day.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients also marked a new high of 1,303, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. The preliminary figure was up nine from the previous day.

Tokyo logged 602 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, down 170 from a week ago. The capital's daily tally was lower than the figure logged on the same day of the previous week for the ninth consecutive day.

According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the average number of new cases in the capital during the seven-day period was 650.4, 74.2% of the previous week's figure of 876.4.

The number of seriously ill patients in Tokyo dropped to 62, down three from the previous day.
