Okinawa Prefecture reported a record 313 newly confirmed infections with the novel coronavirus on Friday.
In Tokyo, 614 new cases were confirmed the same day, down 35 from a week earlier. The daily tally in the capital was lower than the figure on the same day of the previous week for the 15th day in a row.
Six people in their 50s to 90s with COVID-19 died in Tokyo. The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients increased by 1 to 70.
The seven-day moving average of new infections in the capital was 580, or 86% of the average 674.7 set in the previous seven-day period.
The Osaka prefectural government said it confirmed 290 new cases of infections and 13 people with COVID-19 died.
